Matthis Bird Quilt

Matthis Bird Quilt
In the 1960's, my great uncle Gladston Matthis (A.K.A Uncle Doodle) mail ordered a quilt pattern from Progressive Farmer magazine. The iron transfer embroidery pattern contained 50 state birds. My great grand-mother, Eva Mae Ezzell Matthis, completed this quilt for Doodle. For many years after her passing in 1970, Doodle kept the quilt in his room and would occasionally show it to visitors. In the early to mid 1990's, Doodle hung the quilt up (with nails ~cringe~) in the family room. It was especially enjoyed during the annual family reunion each June.

Thanks, Aunt Gail!

Just received a fabulous vintage state bird quilt top in the mail from Gail. I think it dates to the 1950's.  It's in need of some repairs, but it's very nice.  I've not seen this pattern before and will be on the lookout for more information about it's origins.

Too Many M's!

It seemed like a good idea... initial each block so we can remember who made it.  Things were going well until I realized we have a large number of folks with "MM" for initials.  And the last names are different, so it's not just because we are in the same family! So who are these M's?  Cousin M, Aunt M, my daughter M...  (who is practicing, so that she can do her own bird).  It's a happy problem to have.  Thanks again to everyone working on the project.

The Missing Birds

I've been searching for close to a year and I finally found the same pattern that Granny used.  We now have a pattern for all 50 states.

My Little Chickadee!

A few months ago, Aunt Mildred finished this sweet chickadee from Maine.

Nebraska!

Mom finished Nebraska last week and I just got it in the mail.  The brown and gold colors are great and they look so good next to the other completed squares.  Thanks Mom!  Another bird will be flying your way soon.

Thanks, Ann!

Ann did a great job with Tennessee - love the purple iris.
